We didn't start as a proper "organization" ya know. We started as a couple of sibling roommates who just wanted some trick-or-treaters. It was such a bummer to get candy ready and have no one show up! To be fair - our street doesn't have sidewalks or streetlights, but we noticed that there weren't many porch lights either.
People just didn't expect trick-or-treaters in the neighborhood.
Now, we hear this a lot - kids now are different now, they can get more candy trunk-or-treating, it's not as safe these days, we get it. And you know, kids ARE different. So are parents. So we set out do something free and fun, and see what happened.
2018 was our first year with an interactive display. Dan dressed as a farmer who "cut his hand" in a prop chop saw. We had about 10 trick-or-treaters. Immediate success!
2019 was the year of Beetlejuice, and Dan dressed up as the man of the graveyard, rollerblading up and down the street to get people to come by. It was a real guerilla marketing tactic lol!
2020 was our first "big" display: Pirates of Quarantine. If you've been around a while, you'll remember that was the first rendition of our walk-through pirate ship. That year we saw about 100 visitors, and we knew we were onto something special.
As we planned 2021, we decided that, while we would call ourselves "Scare on Stuart", we would keep our displays whimsical, with no scare actors, and no blood/gore.
The goal is to always provide a fun and completely free event for trick-or-treaters of all ages and abilities, and our commitment to our spooky community remains:
We will NEVER charge an entry fee for this event
We will NEVER charge for treats or toys
We will ALWAYS make sure that we accommodate wheelchairs and strollers
We will ALWAYS do our best to accommodate anyone with special needs, and
We will ALWAYS be mindful of allergies (we proudly participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project)
So why become a non-profit? Because we have self-funded this for 7 years, and we want to be able to do MORE.
We have some really big ideas that we can't wait to show you, but the primary goal is to keep this event free for the community we love.
No gatekeeping here.
We reinvent every single year, building new displays, sewing new costumes, and coming up with new ways to entertain.
Our cast and crew is 100% volunteer.
We do this because we love it, and we hope you love it too.
Stay Spooky XOXO Amanda
